As someone who has travelled solo for many years, I was curious to see whether Women Travel Solo by Lonely Planet would rekindle my desire to head off on another adventure. This beautifully produced collection brings together 30 inspiring stories from women who have travelled the world independently, each offering a unique perspective on the joys and challenges of solo travel.
What impressed me most was the diversity of the contributors. Their backgrounds, travel styles and levels of experience vary enormously, making the book feel both inclusive and authentic. Rather than presenting solo travel through rose-tinted glasses, the writers openly share moments of uncertainty alongside the confidence and freedom that come from stepping outside their comfort zones. Even as an experienced solo traveller, I found myself relating to many of their experiences while gaining fresh insight from journeys very different from my own.
The book is a powerful reminder of why travelling alone can be such a rewarding experience. It celebrates the confidence, resilience and independence that solo travel fosters, while recognising that no two journeys are ever the same. As with any Lonely Planet publication, the photography is exceptional. The images complement the stories beautifully, but it was Stefania’s photographs, taken while hitchhiking through Mesopotamia, that particularly caught my attention. They capture both the spirit of adventure and the humanity that lies at the heart of travel.
For those considering their first solo adventure, Women Travel Solo offers reassurance, practical wisdom and plenty of encouragement. More seasoned travellers may not discover a wealth of new advice, but they will appreciate the shared experiences and the reminder that every journey continues to teach us something new. Equally, for anyone who dreams of travelling but cannot do so at the moment, this book provides the opportunity to explore the world through the eyes of others.
Ultimately, Women Travel Solo is an inspiring and empowering celebration of independent travel. While its focus is on women’s experiences, the themes of courage, curiosity and personal growth are universal. It left me reflecting on my own adventures—and, more importantly, reaching for my rucksack once again.
