Event Details

Since the dawn of prehistory, generations of people have explored, exploited, farmed and fought to conserve the Lakeland fells, finding in them inspiration, wealth, sport, adventure and freedom.

In this lavishly-illustrated follow-up to the award-winning Forty Farms, International Photography Award winner Tom McNally and author/Countrystride podcaster David Felton embark on a journey to record the stories – ancient and modern – of forty fells throughout Cumbria.

Stories of the first settlers, who crafted axes from Pike o’ Stickle greenstone; of German miners, who tunnelled deep into Coniston Old Man; of Victorian campaigners who fought for access onto Latrigg; of anti-abolitionists who found inspiration and respite on Hallin Fell; of the great fell-wanderer AW, and his gift of the Wainwrights.

With photo essays documenting shepherds on the Loweswater Gather; endurance athletes on the Winter Spine; life at England’s loneliest house; and conservationists nurturing the rarest of rainforests, Forty Fells is a visual record of the Cumbrian uplands during a period of profound change.

In this illustrated talk, Tom and Dave will discuss their favourite images and stories from the book, and talk about their own relationships with the fells.
