Whilst this book features a dog, Gary, as a key character, it is most definitely not about dogs. It is a lesson in the differences in how human character effect our life choices.
Benjamin is a young man who, as an educational practitioner, I would describe as being on the autistic spectrum. He struggles with his social skills and emotional intelligence and as he thinks to himself has an extensive knowledge of phobias. He lives with his nan and when she is taken in hospital, he is faced with the world on his own for the first time. His one friend, Camille, with whom he works at the supermarket with, encourages him to go down to the local beach and see the whale that has been washed up. It is here he met, Gary, a racing greyhound. Gary follows him home and this leads to adventures way out of Benjamin’s comfort zone.
This is a well written book in which the characters are described with detail and believable accuracy. Whilst some aspects of the plot may seem fantastical, Perry tells the story in a way that drags you in and develops empathy and admiration for Benjamin and the way he overcomes a series of challenges to keep Gary at his side.
If you enjoy a book that helps educate you in how some people view the world with excellent character development, this book will make you smile, maybe laugh and almost certainly tug at your heart strings.
