I’ve been lucky enough to have a preview copy of Lee Schofield’s much anticipated lyrical paean to Haweswater, the reservoir, valley and surrounding land that he manages for the RSPB. Ecologist Lee explores how he is working with other land partners in the area to breathe new life, red in tooth and claw, into this remote valley which has been denuded by the pressures on farming to increase productivity at the expense of the landscape and wildlife.
A call to reconsider land use, Lee’s writing is a combination of a lifelong passion for wildlife and landscape, and an inspirational vision for a future where ecologists, landowners, farmers and the many visitors to the Lake District can work together to refresh the diversity of the living landscape.
A great read for visitors new to the Lake District valleys and those who know it well who might be pleasantly surprised to see another view of this much- loved landscape, and for those inspired by the possibilities of new ways to work in ancient harmony with the living world.
Lee’s evocative prose and his ability to capture the sense-rich experience of being in the Haweswater valley make this a must read.
